For 365 days, The Franklins (Melissa-24, Joey-25, Callan-2 years) lived in the coastal town of Marugame on the island of Shikoku in the Japanese Archapelago. Splitting our time purvaying English conversation skills and taking snap shots of the Japanese countryside, we have attempted to expand our world view through exposure of the cultural and culinary variety.

HI! My name's Scott Alden and I worked at M.I.A. from October of 2002 to October of 2003. I've enjoyed seeing the photos of Marugame and the surrounding areas, recognizing parts of my old stomping ground, and reading some of the blog entries. I found your blog during a web search on MIA. I'm trying to get in touch with Sonoda Sensei but have lost her e-mail address and I can't find MIA's website on the Internet, for some reason. Is it still that "kirakira" thing?
Is this your first time in Marugame? Be sure to ask the locals about the best udon shops, and about the different kinds of udon. You probably know about that by now, I just thought of it when I read your blog entry about McDonald's being a cheap place to eat. You can fill up on tasty, nationally-acclaimed udon for 100-200 yen.
Be careful not to pick up too much of Sonoda Sensei's Japanese. She was my first boss in Japan, and was the first person I tried to model my Japanese language speaking after. It looks like you're pretty fluent, so maybe you already know this, but I didn't learn until later that some of the expressions and mannerisms that I had picked up from her were...well, best not used in public, apparently, and I guess a little 'strong,' enough so to cause discomfort among some, especially when coming from a big foreign man.
Judging by the photo, it looks like you stayed in her house (mmm...multi-colored waribashi). But you said something about a husband? Did she get married? Or are you perhaps talking about her brother, the wiry man who smokes cigarrettes and who teaches (or used to teach) English grammar at MIA?
Well, I've talked enough. It's just nice to see some familiar sights. I hope things go well for you and your family, and your mission. feel free to contact me anytime:
